Showy Lady Slipper (Cypripedium reginae)

Minnesota's state flower (since 1902):

emerging from it's flower "bud"

Hip high on a (short) trail runner
I could have spent all day in that grove of trees exploring this patch of flowers. This is the first time I have seen them emerging from their buds (what a well timed decision to run this stretch of trail!).

Found this hitchhiker when I stopped at my car after carrying some boards to a bridge building site.
